A common question asked of pallet controllers by their senior management is, “Why is there so much fluctuation in the monthly pallet reconciliation results?”

There can be a number of reasons but you need first to be aware of trends.  The best way to identify that there are fluctuations is to view trends in a chart.  CHEP and Loscam both provide trend charts on their online systems as does the PalletWatch system.  A 13 month chart gives you a quick overview of some of the key performance indicators, such as cost, closing balance and variance.

It can be difficult to pinpoint exactly what is causing fluctuations in your variance.  Some possible causes are:
